Founded in 1949 by Carl Olsen and continued through three generations, Snældan is today led by his grandson, Carl Jóhan Olsen. It is not just a production – it is a legacy, carried forward with respect, experience, and pride.
As one of only a few spinning mills in the Faroe Islands, Snældan produces yarn in small, carefully balanced quantities. There is no rush here. Only quality.
Wool with soul and character
Snældan works with an exclusive blend of Faroese wool and Shetland wool – a combination that gives the yarn its very special identity.
The Faroese wool contributes strength and structure, while Shetland wool adds softness and finesse. The result is a yarn with depth, warmth, and a natural elegance that only arises when materials are allowed to be true to their origin.
The colors – from raw, natural shades to deep, saturated tones – have a living quality that cannot be mass-produced.
Created in limited quantities
At Snældan, production is not a matter of volume – but of care.
The wool undergoes a slow and gentle process: it is washed, dyed, carded, spun, and twisted with machines that carry history within them. A large part of the production is dedicated to traditional Faroese national costumes – a craft that requires precision and respect for tradition.
Only a limited amount of yarn makes its way to the stores – not as a strategy, but as a consequence of a craft that cannot be rushed.
Snældan is therefore not something you can always get. It is something you are lucky to find.
