Welcome to Samværk – yarn and coffee in the heart of Vesterbro

We are Anja, Marlene, and Sheila. We work as therapists and psychologists at Tværfagligt Hus for Mental og Kropslig Sundhed (Interdisciplinary House for Mental and Physical Health) in Vesterbro, where we meet people in therapeutic conversations and treatment courses. We also share a common passion for handicrafts, creativity, and community.

In our work as therapists, we are interested in the field called craft psychology – how creating with our hands can affect our mental well-being. Handicrafts can provide calm, concentration, and immersion, and create space for presence and community.

But we also discovered that the same applied to ourselves.

In a daily life characterised by conversations, reflection, and screen work, we also needed to make room for our own creative side. Knitting, working with yarn, and creating something with our hands became a way to find peace and balance.

From that realisation, the idea for Samværk grew.

From dream to reality

2023 – Absalonsgade

In 2023, we took the leap and opened our yarn shop and knitting café in Absalonsgade on Vesterbro. Here, we wanted to create a place where people could gather around yarn, creativity, and slowness – a place where it’s just as natural to immerse oneself in a project as it is to strike up a conversation with the person next to you.

For us, these two worlds are naturally connected. In therapy, we work with people's relationships, well-being, and life situations. In the yarn shop, we experience how handicrafts can create calm, presence, and community.

December 2024 – New chapter at Istedgade 65

In December 2024, we opened the door to a new chapter. Istedgade 65.

The premises were far from what one would initially call a yarn store. An old butcher shop with cold tiles, raw walls, and traces of a completely different life. But amidst the rawness, we could see the possibilities. The light. The space. The soul.

We decided to do it ourselves.

With a rotary hammer in our hands, mortar under our fingernails, and more construction dust than we had ever imagined, the transformation began. Layer by layer, the place took shape – not just as a shop, but as a space.

Today, Istedgade 65 stands as more than an address. It is a living place. A meeting point. A home for creativity.

Anja – patience and purple passion

Couples therapist and financial overview

Anja is a psychologist working with couples therapy. She is certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and has many years of experience working with relationships and partnerships.

At Samværk, Anja has a special responsibility for the shop's finances and structure.

She enjoys the slowness of handicrafts and sees it as a counterbalance to a busy everyday life. Her great love is purple - but only specific shades - and projects that require time, concentration, and patience.

As a couples therapist, she brings a deep understanding of relationships and presence to Samværk. She knows that conversations gain a different depth when people share an experience or create something together.

Sheila – Experimentation and Creativity

Psychomotor Therapist and Webmaster

Sheila is a psychomotor therapist and co-owner of Psykomotoriske Terapeuter København. She co-established the Interdisciplinary House for Mental and Bodily Health in 2017.

In her work, she applies the psychomotor approach, which focuses on the connection between body, emotions, and thoughts. She brings this understanding into Samværk, where the rhythm and immersion of needlework can be a way to create calm, concentration, and presence.

At Samværk, Sheila is responsible for the website and the technical systems behind the shop.

When she knits, she often works intuitively and experimentally. She is particularly interested in avant-garde knitting and in letting colors and materials evolve during the process.

Marlene – colours and quality

Psychologist, SoMe Manager, and Color Enthusiast

Marlene is a psychologist and works with individual therapy, young people, and families, among other things.

At Samværk, she is responsible for the warehouse, social media, and yarn selection.

She has a keen eye for colors and materials and loves helping customers find combinations that bring a project to life.

For Marlene, crafting is also a way to find calm and focus – and a creative way to express herself in a busy daily life.
